Have you read Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince? My French teacher introduced him to me in high school and since then I remember his adventures with a lot of love. In fact, I was so fascinated by his story that I decided to use him as inspiration for the following tale.
The little prince was lying in the grass one afternoon. He watched the clouds go by and he remembered his adventures. All of a sudden, something small flew over him. This scared the little prince. He jumped and looked around. He saw a little bird. She was beating her wings so fast that she looked like she was floating in midair. The little prince couldn’t believe what he was seeing! He ran quickly. He wanted to meet her before she disappeared again.“Hel…”The little prince wanted to greet her, but she interrupted.“Good afternoon! Bzzzzz.”And without letting the little prince reply, she continued,“You’re new here, huh? Bzzz. The flowers told me all about you, but I’ve only seen you from far away. Bzzzz.”The little prince tried to reply:“Nice to m–”But the little bird had already flown away. The little prince began to run behind her. He wanted to know her.“What kind of bird are you?”“I’m a hummingbird, can’t you see?”While she answered him, she nuzzled the flowers too. She didn’t even stop to breathe between words. The little prince tried to keep up, but he got tired. He yawned and waited a moment to think. Then he asked her, “And what are you doing here?”“I’m a traveler like you! There’s so much to see and know in this world! I only stay for a little while in each place. And I never return. Bye! Bzzzzzzz…”And just like that, she left. The little hummingbird’s words left the little prince sad and confused, but he didn’t know why. What do you think?
- Is the little prince sad for a reason?
- Have you ever felt sad? When?
- What could happen next in the story?
