Introduction
This is a short story about a cold afternoon, a lost dog, and two people who decide to help. The narrator enjoys taking walks in the park. One day, they find a small dog that seems sad and alone. The story follows what happens next, and how helping someone creates a warm and positive feeling.
This story is a good way to practice vocabulary about weather, feelings, and everyday situations. It also includes many useful function words (words like “because”, “unless” and “yet”) and which will appear on the quiz below.
Story
It was a cold afternoon. I am a person who likes walking. I was walking in the park near my house. The sky was blue, but a cold wind was blowing. I saw a cute little dog. It was under a bench, and it looked sad. It was alone.
“Hello,” I said to the dog. “Where is your friend?”
I didn’t know whether it was lost or just waiting. It looked at me. Its tail was between its legs. I called to the dog, but it did not come. It looked sad, yet it was also scared.
“What shall I do?” I thought. “Unless I help, it will get too cold.” I must help this dog.
Then, a woman came up to me. She asked, “Is that dog yours?”
“No,” I said. “It is not mine. I just found it. I have been trying to call it.”
She said, “My name is Anna. I live near here. I saw this dog before, while I was jogging. I think I know whose dog it is. It belongs to a man who lives on my street. His dog is smaller than mine.”
“Shall we try to take him home?” I asked.
“Yes,” she said. “We should go. If we wait, he might run off.”
So, I went with her. We walked through the park and out onto the street. We talked about dogs. She had a dog, and hers was a big, friendly one. We walked for ten minutes. After a short time, we arrived at a red house, which was on the corner.
“This is the house where he lives,” she said. Anna rang the bell. We waited, but no one answered.
“Maybe they are not home,” I said.
“Let’s wait for one more minute,” she said.
Before we could ring again, a man opened the door. He looked very worried.
“Oh, Sparky!” he shouted when he saw the dog. “You are here! I have been looking for you everywhere!” He was so happy. He thanked us many times. “Thank you! You are very kind. My children were looking, too. I must call them.”
The dog, Sparky, was happy to be home. His owner, Mr. Peters, was also happy. He said he did not know how Sparky got out.
He pointed to some photos on his wall. “These are my children, and those are my other pets.”
Anna and I said goodbye. We were happy because we had helped. It is a good feeling to do something nice for someone. I went home, and I felt warm, although it was still a cold day. Since I had done a good thing, I made myself a hot cup of tea to celebrate.
